PICO IYER

He is a British Born essayist, novelist, and travel writer. I love his observations about travel and culture. How everything has some strange contradiction and connection, and how he, much like how I feel, is a citizen of the world.

Here are some of his travel quotes; ENJOY!

“American dreams are strongest in the hearts of those who have seen America only in their dreams.”
-Pico Iyer

“Quitting, for me, means not giving up, but moving on; changing direction not because something doesn’t agree with you, but because you don’t agree with something. It’s not a complaint, in other words, but a positive choice, and not a stop in one’s journey, but a step in a better direction. Quitting-whether a job or a habit-means taking a turn so as to be sure you’re still moving in the direction of your dreams.”
–Pico Iyer, “Quit Pro Quotes”, Utne Reader, Sept./Oct. 1996

The person susceptible to "wanderlust" is not so much addicted to movement as committed to transformation.
-Pico Iyer

“I take very seriously the sense of our living these days in a global neighborhood. And the first sensible thing to do in such circumstances, as well as one of the most rewarding things, is to go and meet the neighbors, find out who they are, and what they think and feel. So travel for me is an act of discovery and of responsibility as well a grand adventure and a constant liberation.” —Pico Iyer

We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate.

~ Pico Iyer

"If you're the kind of person who prefers freedom to security, who feels more comfortable in a small room than a large one and who finds that happiness comes from matching your wants to your needs, then running to stand still isn't where your joy lies."

- Pico Iyer from THE JOYS OF LESS

“Japan is therefore an ideal place because I never will be a true citizen here, and will always be an outsider, however long I live here and however well I speak the language. And the society around me is as comfortable with that as I am… I am not rooted in a place, I think, so much as in certain values and affiliations and friendships that I carry everywhere I go; my home is both invisible and portable. But I would gladly stay in this physical location for the rest of my life, and there is nothing in life that I want that it doesn’t have.”

Pico Iyer, interview in Wild River Review (November 19, 2007)

Alphonse de Lamartine

This guy is pretty awesome. He was born in 1790 and was a French writer, poet and politician. One of his most notable pieces of work is the poem; “The Lake”. You should totally read it. It’s based off of his love for a married woman who later died shortly after their meeting. He never became famous while alive and spent most of his time traveling and working for the French government while shamelessly indulging in his love for poetry and the written word. He also led initiatives that would lead to the abolition of slavery and the death penalty in France. Go Alphonse! Anyway, he eventually died penniless doing what he loved best- writing.

If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.

To love for the sake of being loved is human, but to love for the sake of loving is angelic.

Alphonse de Lamartine

Poetry is the morning dream of great minds.
Alphonse de Lamartine

Religions are not proved, are not demonstrated, are not established, are not overthrown by logic! They are of all the mysteries of nature and the human mind, the most mysterious and most inexplicable; they are of instinct and not of reason.

Anais Nin
She's pretty sweet! She was a French and Cuban Author and wrote in a dairy (which was later published) from age 11 to shortly before her death. She acted in a few films and lived in Paris and New York. She's also very famous for her erotica. According to Wikipedia, She was one of the first women to fully explore the realm of erotic writing, and the first women of status in europe to write Erotica.

“You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world, and you believe you are living. Then you read a book(Lady Chatterley, for instance), or you take a trip, or you talk with Richard, and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating. The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness. The second symptom(when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all. It appears like an innocuous illness. Monotony, boredom, death. Millions live like this(or die like this) without knowing it. They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children. And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death."”

“Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.”
Anais Nin quote

“Love never dies a natural death. It dies because we don't know how to replenish it's source. It dies of blindness and errors and betrayals. It dies of illness and wounds; it dies of weariness, of witherings, of tarnishings.”
Anais Nin quote

Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the actions stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living.
Anais Nin

The personal life deeply lived always expands into truths beyond itself.
Anais Nin

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.”
Anais Nin quote

“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection”
Anais Nin quote

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
Anais Nin

Each contact with a human being is so rare, so precious, one should preserve it.
Anais Nin

I will not be just a tourist in the world of images, just watching images passing by which I cannot live in, make love to, possess as permanent sources of joy and ecstasy.
Anais Nin

People living deeply have no fear of death.
Anais Nin

The dream was always running ahead of me. To catch up, to live for a moment in unison with it, that was the miracle.
Anais Nin

We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls.
Anais Nin

We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.

Rabindranath Tagore

By far, an amazing writer and philosopher who thought with his heart, his mind, his senses, and the breathe of life that guides us all. "He was an Indian Bengali polymath. He was a popular poet, novelist, musician, and playwright who reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse",[1] and as the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature,[2] Tagore was perhaps the most widely regarded Indian literary figure of all time. He was a mesmerizing representative of the Indian culture whose influence and popularity internationally perhaps could only be compared to that of Gandhi, whom Tagore named 'Mahatma' out of his deep admiration for him."

Age considers; youth ventures.

I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door - or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present.
-Rabindranath Tagore

Death is not extinguishing the light; it is only putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.
-Rabindranath Tagore

Depth of friendship does not depend on length of acquaintance.
-Rabindranath Tagore

Trees are Earth's endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.
-Rabindranath Tagore

Let your life lightly dance on the edges of Time like dew on the tip of a leaf.
-Rabindranath Tagore

Love does not claim possession, but gives freedom.

Oscar Wilde
(1854 – 1900)
He was an Anglo-Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and short story writer. One of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day, known for his barbed and clever wit, Some of his most notable works of arts are "The Picture of Dorian Gray", "Lady Windermere's Fan","A Woman of No Importance," and "The Importance of Being Earnest."

"To influence a person is to give him one's own soul. He does not think his natural thoughts, or burn with his natural passions. His virtues are not real to him. His sins, if there are such things as sins, are borrowed. He becomes an echo of someone else's music, an actor of a part that has not been written for him. The aim of life is self-development. To realise one's own nature perfectly - that is what each of us is here for."
Oscar Wilde

"That is one of the great secrets of life - to cure the soul by means of the senses, and the senses by means of the soul. You are a wonderful creation. You know more than you think you know, just as you know less than you want to know."
Oscar Wilde

"A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal."
Oscar Wilde

"A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world."
Oscar Wilde

"America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between.”
Oscar Wilde

“Who, being loved, is poor?”
Oscar Wilde

“Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals.”
Oscar Wilde

“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”
Oscar Wilde

Carl Gustav Jung
26 July 1875 – 6 June 1961
A Swiss psychiatrist, an influential thinker and the founder of analytical psychology. Jung is often considered the first modern psychologist to state that the human psyche is "by nature religious" and to explore it in depth.[1] Though not the first to analyze dreams, he has become perhaps the most well known pioneer in the field of dream analysis. Although he was a theoretical psychologist and practicing clinician, much of his life's work was spent exploring other areas, including Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, sociology, as well as literature and the arts.

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”
Carl Gustav Jung

“If one does not understand a person, one tends to regard him as a fool.”
Carl Gustav Jung

“The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely”
Carl Gustav Jung

“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”
Carl Gustav Jung

“To be normal is the ideal aim of the unsuccessful.”
Carl Gustav Jung

"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become."
"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become."
Carl Gustav Jung

"The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases."
Carl Gustav Jung

"It is often tragic to see how blatantly a man bungles his own life and the lives of others yet remains totally incapable of seeing how much the whole tragedy originates in himself, and how he continually feeds it and keeps it going."
Carl Gustav Jung
